GRADARA - CITY OF ART
An hour from Loreto
Gradara is famous for being the place where the tragedy of Paolo and Francesca took place, described masterfully by Dante Alighieri and other famous poets, writers, musicians and painters.
Just 5 km from the Cattolica-Gabicce Mare exit of the A14 motorway, Gradara is easily reachable: it is about 25 km from Rimini and 13 km from Pesaro and has ample and convenient parking spaces, designed specifically for visitors.
Castle of Gradara
The history of the Rocca began back in 1150, when the powerful family of De Griffo began the construction of the keep. Between 1200 and 1400 the Malatesta build the fortress and the walls that we can still admire today.
Here numerous events take place, the most important being the Siege at the Castle, held in August. It is a historical re-enactment that involves the entire city, transforming it, thanks to musical performances, juggling and fireworks in a lively medieval village.
It is said that it was Gradara who hosted the clandestine love story between Paolo and Francesca, from the tragic epilogue. Francesca was, in fact, the wife of Giovanni Malatesta, known as Gianciotto, who lived here. His love with Paul was told by Dante in the Divine Comedy, which made him immortal.
