Castle of Gradara

Castle of Gradara

The history of the Rocca began back in 1150, when the powerful family of De Griffo began the construction of the keep. Between 1200 and 1400 the Malatesta build the fortress and the walls that we can still admire today. Here numerous events take place, the most important being the Siege at the Castle, held in August. It is a historical re-enactment that involves the entire city, transforming it, thanks to musical performances, juggling and fireworks in a lively medieval village. It is said that it was Gradara who hosted the clandestine love story between Paolo and Francesca, from the tragic epilogue. Francesca was, in fact, the wife of Giovanni Malatesta, known as Gianciotto, who lived here. His love with Paul was told by Dante in the Divine Comedy, which made him immortal. Click for more info
